Wood-N-Strings Dulcimer Shop

We founded our shop to build and sell handcrafted mountain dulcimers, turning a lifelong love of music into a dedicated craft. Over thirty years ago, an acquaintance asked us to help catch up on dulcimer orders right here in Townsend. Armed with years of experience repairing guitars and basses, we accepted the challenge and learned the art of dulcimer building. Our instruments begin with high grade solid woods, including walnut, cherry, butternut, sassafras, or wormy chestnut. We air dry the tops down to six or seven percent humidity and carefully book match them.

Using a fiddle bow and rosin, we hand tune the wood to determine its exact resonant frequency. We scrape the wood until the tone is completely consistent for both pieces. We also created the Ban-Jammer, an original instrument that produces a uniquely happy sound. We invite you to visit our shop by appointment to watch how our dulcimers are handcrafted. We remain committed to providing exceptional service and helping you create the special dulcimer sound you have always wanted.
