Services
Guitar Tex was opened in 1999 as primarily a repair shop and a place to sell some of Founder Mark Waldrop's used instruments. Although many things have changed, the store's focus has always been to get great playing instruments in the hands of players who will use them and enjoy them for years to come.
Bench Rate Services or repairs which do not have a fixed rate will be billed at the bench rate of $78 per hour ($1.30 per minute) with a minimum charge of $15. Most common services and repairs have a fixed rate listed in the sections below. Some repairs or services can present unexpected complications and may require additional labour charges beyond the fixed rate, in these cases you will be contacted with a revised estimate.
From the beginning we knew that Guitar Tex would concentrate on acoustic guitars, but not exclusively. We saw that the acoustic community was huge, but was sorely underserved. Since we opened in 1999 that dynamic has changed and we had a lot to do with getting other retailers to realize there was a big market that was being ignored.

Went to multiple stores looking to get my 12 string guitar machine head fixed. The high quality staff here were the only ones in the area who could get the job done. Plus I got to play a pretty fun fretless bass while I waited. : Great store. Knowledgeable and FRIENDLY staff.

Had a really weird experience with this place. Dropped off a strat for a setup, it had some buzzing that I thought could be resolved. They told me it would be ready in 1-2 weeks. 2 1/2 weeks later I hadn't heard anything so I called and they said they hadn't gotten to it. They would start it that day and it would be ready the next day. When I picked it up, they had decked the tremolo (was floating previously).

They recommended larger gauge strings and a new nut. I asked if I should I go ahead and get the net replaced and they said no, take it home and play it for a while. When I got home I found a large scratch/crack in the back that wasn't there when I dropped it off. It's really weird that they didn't ask me how I wanted anything setup or call me to talk about their recommendations before completing the setup. In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't have them do any extra work on it.

Guitar Tex is a fantastic little spot! John recommended some Curt Mangan Marfa Lights strings for my 68 Gibson B-25 acoustic and I couldn't be more pleased with them. Customer Service is top notch and I will be back

Wow! What a great service shop. Took a failed project that I attempted to JB over at Texas tex. not only was he very experienced in what he did but also very enthusiastic about my project. Most guitar techs I come across have a "how much money can I get out of this, and how fast can I turn it around" mindset, but here I felt my project was cared for, Was done very professionally, and went out to do the best job he could. Gave me a lead time, and was done in that time(even though I came in later with additional work I wanted done to the guitar), and was quality work, which is all a customer could ask for. On time and quality. He even gave me alternative ideas to think about as well. Will never do business with another service shop besides guitar Tex. Well done!

Fantastic Experience. When a beginner walks into any specialized shop, that beginner can be especially sensitive to the attitude of the shop toward those less experienced. John Ramirez of Guitar Tex went out of his way to make this beginner feel like a valued customer in the shop. I came in to simply get my brand new guitar "set up". John spent probably 30 minutes with me sharing knowledge and explaining all sorts of things about my brand new guitar. Later when I picked it up, he again made me feel welcome. The shop was prompt and reasonably priced - with one of the best customer service cultures I've experienced.

I first found Guitar Tex when looking for someone to fix the binding on my Martin D18. It separated and I went to three places that refused to touch it because they didn't know how to do it properly. Finally I went to guitar Tex and they said they could do it. I could tell they could, too. Everyone in there just oozes experience. These people know what they're doing.

It did take quite a few weeks to get the work done, so keep that in mind. It's one or two fellas working on a slew of instruments. You have to take a number! But when you get it back, it's like brand new. After that experience, I decided this would be my go to shop. I have purchased two Martin guitars from them: two Martin D28s one old and one new.

They offer fair prices for their instruments and even worked on the newer D28 I purchased to get the action down a bit for free! They're nice, the shop is nice, the services they offer are nice, and the gear is nice. I want them to take my money because I want them to stay in business. I will say if you're into electric guitars, they have a pretty small selection. Acoustic selection is amazing.

Wow what a fantastic guitar shop. The finish on my Larrivee had cracked after it was dropped, and Guitar Tex was the closest shop in Texas that could repair finishes. It's a four hour drive from where I live and I dropped it off. I got a call a week or two later from Logan Mask, where he went over the details of the repair and what would be involved, and provided an estimate.

Fast forward a couple weeks and the guitar was ready. I was able to line up picking up the guitar with another matter I had to be in San Antonio for. They kept their shop open about 30 minutes after closing to accommodate me, which was a huge favor (my meeting in San Antonio went WAY longer than expected). The bill was exactly as estimated and the repair work was top notch--way better than expected.

The first two photos are before, the third is after. I really can't say enough about these folks, they are class. Will be returning if I need any work on any of my other guitars!

This is my first review ever. I went to Guitar Tex this morning to sell some gear. Mark was very kind and gave me fair offers for what I brought in. It's a really cool little shop with some good quality items. When I am able to purchase again I will be returning. Great selection of mandolins. Check this place out.

This is a nice place to be. Lots of stuff to look at. Knowledgeable folks working. John Ramierez has been in the music sales business for years and can always help steer you in the right direction. The owner is swell as well!

Very helpful and answered all my questions. Fast repair and very reasonably priced. Will be back for our future guitar needs. We also appreciate how serious they are taking the covid crisis keeping everyone safe yet still so easy to work with.

They set up my Martin like a dream. If you need a Luthier or just love guitars, this is the place. I will be back again to purchase my next guitar. I dropped off my Martin because the action was off and not only was the price extremely reasonable but it was ready 48 hrs later. Amazing.

I recently brought in a mandolin I had received but knew little about. Gus was so helpful with my questions, he even took the time to sit down with me and show me tuning and a few simple chords. I will be back for sure!

Nice guys and really know there stuff. I took a guitar in for a possible repair (fret work). The guy looked at it and told me that it didn't need the work right away and I should wait to have it done. He could have just said ok and taken my money. I appreciate his honesty.

Needed a guitar for my 15 year old son who is starting guitar classes in school. I have been to a few good music stores in town as I have other childern who are in music. Gus at Guitar Tex was amazing. He took time to spend time with my son and really understand his guitar ambition. He could have sold me a guitar for twice as much but really got down to what we needed and matched that with my sons wishes and a great product. I cannot reccomend this shop and Gus enough.

Mark as well as his staff are the friendliest coolest cats in town. I have traded instruments with Mark over the years and have no regrets at all. Mark is a straight shooter and hope his store is around a very long time. The past few months while struggling to find work, I would basically loiter and listen try and stay out of the way. Mark and his staff never made me feel unwelcome. I have learned a lot about guitars at Guitar Tex, so I don't mind encouraging those young and old to visit the best little guitar store I know.

If you are a guitar, mandolin or uke player, you will want to get to know Guitar Tex in San Antonio. Big selection of instruments, both electric and acoustics, mandos and ukes, too, and some boutique amps. I don't trust my instruments to any one else but Guitar Tex, from major repairs to restringing and set up. In addition to all of that in one small, friendly shop, these guys have more knowledge about instruments than anyone in the area.

They are NOT just trying to get you to buy something and get you out the door. They will take time to help you find the right instrument and then stand behind it after the sale. Highly recommended.

Between having known Mark Waldrop since 1998, having had practically EVERY stringed instrument worked on at some point and time by him or the staff, purchasing a hard case for a homeless guitar, buying my first ukulele, strings, strings and more strings, MY FIRST MARTIN!, did I mention I just drop by to visit sometimes?. Let me also mention that beginners would be smart to go to Guitar Tex too because they aren't desperate to sell you something you're not ready for. They will match the instrument to your level. THAT'S CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ITS FINEST!

These guys repaired my Martin when i thought no one could. It was in pretty bad shape thanks to UPS. 10 years later it still plays, feels and sounds perfect. That AND the legendary John Michael Ramirez works there. He's good people for sure. What a great guitar shop.

Some times being a know it all loses business. The shop is also set up like Sarah M. said for serious, technical musicians. Not for uneducated girls needing help with restringing their guitar (me). Otherwise, cool looking guitars, some priced the same as a year of tuition at Montessori school (A LOT).

This is just my kind of guitar store. The place is small but the selection is diverse and good. They carry several Reverend guitars, which I'd never played but really liked upon playing. They were also CHEAP; the base model went for 600 and change. They also carried some interesting Cole Clark guitars, which were made out of unusual Australian woods.

I think the CC Strat weighed about 2 pounds, which was awesome considering how heavy electric guitars can be. This is a shop for people who play but still want nice and good gear for a price they can afford. Very friendly staff and plenty of cool guitars to play. Highly recommended.
