Frederic T Hickman Frederic Hickman's Piano Workshop has been serving the greater Baltimore-Washington-Annapolis areas since 1984. The shop is situated in a bucolic setting in Edgewater, Maryland, just minutes from Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay. Mr. Hickman became interested in the workings of the piano already as a child, and by his mid-twenties he had launched into a career as a piano technician with the successful refurbishing of an old Estey upright purchased from the Salvation Army.

If I could give Julian more than 5 stars I would, I have never had a teacher that puts the amount of time and effort into making sure that I am successful in what I am doing like he does. Julian has such a wide variety of knowledge on many different subjects. I currently just finished my college portfolio applying to a music tech program at UMBC, Julian has helped me from the moment I decided that is what I wanted to do, even through the challenges of the pandemic.

This included sitting on video sessions with me and going over the basics of recording and processing audio, listening to my mixes and giving me advice on them, as well as getting me prepared from just starting piano back in march to having two memorized classical pieces for my upcoming audition. He made virtual lessons still feel like I was receiving the same quality that I would in person and has integrated his setup to be able to easily have him visually play pieces and explain things as if I were there.

I did not think I would have progressed as far as I have in the seven months I have been taking lessons with Julian, but I have not only been able to reach my goals, but exceed them with his help. I highly recommend Julian as a teacher and continue to look forward to my lessons every week.

Julian is an excellent piano teacher. I began taking lessons in October 2019. I had neither a musical background or a piano. I began weekly lessons and was amazed at how quickly I progressed and learned. By January Julian had helped me successfully purchase a piano. When the pandemic hit I thought for sure my short lived dream was over, or at least would be delayed until in studio practices were open.

However Julian was able to seamlessly transition into an online format that has been not only effective but still enjoyable as well. Our lessons were able to continue without missing a beat! The amazing thing as well is that I don't have a tablet or a laptop and yet we have had successful one hour piano lessons through my phone, which if asked back in March I would have said was not possible.

I look forward to in person lessons again soon but Julian's dedication to teaching is remarkable through an online format considering how quickly everyone had to adjust when the pandemic began. Each lesson is fun and creative, learning and appreciating music more and more with each one. Julian is supportive and encouraging and honestly we could probably spend our one hour lesson talking about the Beatles instead of practicing. I continue to look forward to learning the piano and understanding the beautiful language of music, all in thanks to a fantastic teacher in Julian.
