It is also true that most neglected or untuned pianos can be brought back into shape with the right approach and a little extra work.

If the instrument is primarily used as a decorative ornament, the exterior of the piano is the first thing that people notice and it is refinished. If people are actively playing it, sound is important. The mechanical guts of the piano that make the sound gets restored. That entails wooden parts, hammers, strings, keys, pins and there are many uses of felt in parts of the action.
