Introducing Fretshop version 2.0! After almost 25 years in a retail space on Fifth Avenue in Columbus Ohio, I moved the Fretshop into my home in Central Clintonville north of Downtown Columbus and am now taking client work again. The several month overhaul gave me an opportunity to work from an almost blank slate, incorporating tools, fixtures, and procedures that worked well from the old shop and making new changes to create a cleaner more efficient work space in the new shop.Instrument work will now be taken in and picked up by appointment.
Services
Mission: To provide our customers with solutions for a superior playing experience and to preserve fretted instruments for future generations. Central to the practice is solving problems with procedures, not simply doing work on guitars. The goal is to understand the players needs and desires then give them solutions to these needs; sometimes with options they aren't aware of or haven't considered.
Phil founded the Fretshop in 1998. A working musician since the early 1980's, Phil began using his skills as a woodworker and predilection for tinkering to repair his own instruments. From there, he began working on his friends and bandmates' instruments, and a business was born. Early in the 1990's, he moved his shop into the back of Cowtown guitars, a venerable Vintage Guitar shop in Columbus Ohio, until establishing the Fifth Avenue Fret Shop, where his lutherie practice has been for the last two decades.

To adjust an instrument to "factory spec" is to serve the instrument and force the player to come to it. Instead the instrument is asked to move to meet the player.

I trade guitars with the Fret shop. The transaction was smooth as could be done! My trade was accessed and a deal was made. I am so happy with my Eastman mandolin and Ibanez bass. I was treated like family and given the best deal possible. Can't wait to make another stop by the Fret Shop! 5 stars all the way!

Awesome place! Staff was friendly, didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need. My 3yo and I looked around for a bit, and the dude at the desk even found her a kazoo. I loved the building, too-- it's half Greek temple, half log cabin, packed to the rafters with gorgeous instruments and musical delights.

I saw the name of this place and I had to stop. Fantastic selection of new and used guitars, basses, etc. The staff is polite and helpful. I will be coming back to purchase a guitar soon. Forget about the guitar center. this place is far out man.

Gave them 3 starts because of my last visit. I have taken my guitars there before for set up and they have done a great job. This time my Strat was buzzing right after I got it back from them, took it back and I tough it would be taken care of under their repair warranty, they made me wait another 2 weeks and charged me again for fixing the fret buzz that wasn't taken care in the begging.

I won't shop there anymore. I needed a small screw for a PRS truss rod cover and the luthier wouldn't even take the time to speak to the young man helping me, or look through his box of old screws to help. Bad customer service. I've always tried to buy from The Fret Shop vs. Guitar Center and have often made purchases there. Including a Martin guitar. Good thing he stays in the back. He cost the store future sales, with his attitude.

The best! Dropped off my new to me martin that had medium gage strings and a little high action for me. They adjusted my neck to accommodate ultralight gage Martin strings! And I love it more now! Mine is a cut away and it is Fast now! It's a hot rod! Accustic lead guitar check!

This is a neat little store. They've always been helpful and friendly. Great selection of instruments to buy and rent. I think if it has strings they can probably help you out. They restrung our cello and did a great job.
