We've designed our instruments and instrument kits to be as affordable and as easy to assemble as possible - without sacrificing any playability. As musicians, we build harps, dulcimers, and banjos of a quality that we ourselves enjoy playing at home, around the campfire, and in the classroom. Many Backyard Music instruments become lifetime companions for the people who buy or build them. Action refers to the distance between the string and the frets/fingerboard. If the action is too low, strings buzz.
Services
Dulcimers are the easiest stringed instrument for beginners to play, ideal for children and non-musicians who want to play tunes or accompany singing. We make inexpensive beginner instruments by using durable corrugated cardboard for the sound box. Our dulcimer kits can easily be assembled with Elmer's glue, a Phillips head screwdriver, and a hammer.
Banjo production is paused until further notice -- we hope to be back up and running soon! For now, all banjo products will show an "Out of Stock" message. Our Banjo Lite banjos are light-weight, inexpensive, and durable open-backed 5-string banjos designed for beginning players, for quiet practice, or for backpacking and travel.
Backyard Music folk harps are light and sturdy with a 3 piece hardwood frame and a resonating soundbox of strong corrugated carboard. The lowest string is G below middle C. Conventional color coded harp strings are used (Fs are blue and Cs are red). This version of the Fireside Folk Harp kit comes with the soundbox prepainted one of our standard colors: barn read, teal green, blue, or merlot purple.
This section of the site is designed for teachers, recreation leaders, and music therapists using folk instruments in the general music classroom or with aspiring musicians of all ages. On the Music page, we will post for download transcriptions, compositions, and arrangements that we think you may enjoy using with your students. Feel free to send us music on paper, or as a pdf file or any other format that you think others can read.
