The "modern" piano, the term I use for most pianos built after 1900, is considered by many to be the noblest of instruments. More music has been written for it than for any other instrument; it has a broader tonal and dynamic range by far than any other instrument; and a piano played well can indeed "sooth the savage beast." I have been around pianos my entire life, and have been tuning, repairing, rebuilding and refinishing them since about 1973.

Since piano technicians often encounter questions that are difficult to answer in the limited time span of a service call, I have written a number of articles in response to many of the questions you may have always wanted to ask about pianos, but didn't know who to ask or how to ask.

Keith at Allegro Piano Works rebuilt my mom's Ivers & Pond upright about three years ago and did a great job. He has also worked on the Mason & Hamlin 'Parlor Grand. He tunes both at least once a year. I would recommend him without reservation.

I stumbled upon Keith Comparetto twenty-one years ago when an elderly relative gave my family her upright piano. She had bought it herself in the early 1900s, and we wanted to honor this gift and do it justice -- without breaking the bank. Keith gave us a realistic idea of the instrument's quality and repairability, along with a repair plan at various levels of restoration.

We found his quotes completely reasonable and decided on a mid-level approach. The result was fantastic, and this piano became the musical center of the house. Our kids were four and five years old at the time, and thanks to Keith's work, they grew up with this constant source of beauty at their fingertips. Each wound up majoring in music. Eventually, Keith restored another 100-plus-year-old upright for me at a different home, and all the while he's kept both pianos in tune, making whatever small repairs might be needed along the way. I can't imagine going to anyone else.

Keith has cared for our family heirloom Steinway for several years now. It was not always cared for so well, but Keith finessed repairs and tweaks to keep it playing and looking beautiful. What's more, he is super polite and respectful when working in our home; he was especially kind to my elderly mother who used to hang around and watch him work! Always cheerful and helpful. And he was even able to produce an expert appraisal for our insurance company. I highly recommend his services.

Keith has been tuning my 1894 Steinway parlor grand for a few years. Last year he did a complete refurbishment of it. I am so delighted with the job he did that I cannot praise him highly enough. His patience and skill are remarkable. He is extremely knowledgeable which is so important when one decides to commit to such a major investment of time and money and the preservation of a family piece so treasured for generations.

He gives excellent value and he charges reasonable prices. He also completed the work in a timely fashion. He continues to tune the newly restored instrument to ensure the quality of its tone. He has more than earned the five stars I gladly award him.

I highly recommend Keith Comparetto as both a piano tuner and restorer. He has been tuning my old Ivers and Pond piano for many years, and also did a gorgeous job restoring it. He is reliable and trustworthy, great to do business with!

I would definitely recommend Keith Comparetto. He has been taking care of my Wurlitzer baby grand piano for almost ten years. He was recommended by the woman who sold me the piano, with good reason. Keith is very professional; he shows up as scheduled, it's obvious that he loves what he does, and he's very personable! He tunes my piano annually and installed a new Piano Saver system in 2017. Also, his prices seem very fair.

Keith has been our piano technician for many years. We even bought our 1927 baby grand piano, which he beautifully restored, from him. Highly recommend!

A piano teacher friend recommended Keith. He not only tuned our Acrosonic piano, but also refurbished the inside. It sounds like new! He was prompt, professional, and a joy to work with. Highly recommend. Keith knows his stuff!

Having known Keith for well over a decade, I can say without reservation he is craftsman and piano tuner of extraordinary talent. He knows his craft and applies it to the advantage of his customers. An accomplished piano teacher referred me to Keith many years ago as a competent and extremely reliable piano tuner. Keith has taken tremendous care of several Yamaha uprights and grand pianos I've owned in past years.

Perhaps more impressive than his regular tunings, he has rebuilt two Ivers & Pond uprights, They are wonderous instruments and Keith has brought them back to life. The results of his work were so astonishing on the first rebuild (originally manufactured in 1911), I commissioned him to restore a second one (1915) for my summer residence in mid-coast Maine.

Both pianos have that deep, rich resonant Ivers & Pond sound that seems to go on forever. They have both played wonderfully for years now. Keith's work is worthy of high praise. Keith listens carefully and communicates well. He effectively sets expectations and can be relied upon to perform his work on time and with careful attention to detail. Exceptional.
